What is happening?

The UK’s PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network) is being switched off in 2025. This means the landline of any home or business phone that operates on the old analogue phone network will be switched off. This affects traditional landlines, as well as anything else relying on copper lines such as FTTC and ADSL broadband, alarms, door entry systems, card machines, and EPOS.

What and when

What Is Being Switched Off and When?

The switch off encompasses two parallel projects: the Full Fibre Priority Exchange Programme and the withdrawal of any analogue service that relies on copper lines (PSTN and ISDN). Both will be completed in 2025, while the Fibre Exchange will promise 85% broadband coverage by the end of that year. However, the roll-out is already underway.

Benefits of UK's PSTN Switch Off

Full fibre broadband is up to 5x more reliable and 25x faster than traditional copper line-based broadband.

A unified comms infrastructure using platforms like Microsoft Teams and CRMs such as Pipedrive, streamline business processes and facilitate collaboration and innovation.
Digital voice services and cloud-based phone systems are more scalable, and efficient, as well as being budget-friendly.
Full fibre connectivity is more energy-efficient and requires less resources than PSTN lines, making for a more sustainable communication infrastructure.

PSTN stands for Public Switched Telephone Network. It’s the UK’s traditional phone system and it has been in use for more than a century. While it has served the country well, its copper wiring is now obsolete due to its fragility and the impracticality of maintenance

The PSTN has been in use since 1876. As such, it’s now obsolete, especially with the advent of recent technological advances such as smart phones, the cloud, the IoT, etc. Fibre broadband has overtaken the PSTN too, so BT Openreach has decided to switch off the PSTN. This will allow them to focus on more efficient and innovative technologies
It’s estimated that around 2 million UK businesses still operate on legacy networks and phone lines, as of March 2023. If you fall into this category, then it’s time to think about making the switch and futureproofing your company. If you want to get ahead of your competitors and save yourself hassle in the near future, you should be looking to upgrade as soon as possible. Fibre broadband along with digital voice services such as cloud-based phone systems won’t just streamline your business – they’ll save you money too

Although the switch off is happening in December 2025, we highly recommend that you get a head start and switch over as soon as possible.

Yes, you certainly can. Going digital doesn’t mean your business has to lose its established phone number. With the switch, you’ll be able to make calls on any device and from anywhere on the same phone number. Want to change numbers to something a bit more on brand? No problem, because you can do that too.

Yes! We can help you handle the switch. We’ll get you up and running with fibre broadband, cloud-based phone systems, and digital voice services.
